A fun approach to ‘working your craft’ is through color studies – aka – choosing a particular color scheme and creating imagery around it.
It becomes a challenge in itself, and forces you to get really creative – especially if you decide to create an entire promotional campaign around it.
Which is exactly what I did here with a 2 month long color study that I conceptualized, art directed and photographed beginning in early spring of this year, and turned into a series of images that I used for various marketing purposes.
Taking time to create new imagery through personal projects is also the time to learn or work on new skills, and reach personal goals.
My personal goal in this series was to predominately use artificial light.
Like many, I have built my business and visual brand of photography using primarily natural/existing light.
However, as my client base has been shifting towards commercial/advertising work, I’ve been leaning into alternative/consistent lighting options for more consistent control of lighting, over longer periods of shooting time.
To be honest, it was initially a challenging transition, but along the way I’ve fallen in love with a new way of seeing/using/playing with light.
This, in turn, has opened up entirely new creative directions for me both professionally and personally, which, in turn, has sparked a whole new level of excitement for my craft.
It always go back to my mantra of ‘Work Your Craft.’
I am excited to share this first of a series look book of color studies. Just click on the full screen icon at the bottom right of the image below for the full Look Book.
